Last Week’s Program: (September 16)
President Rick McLeod called the meeting to order with the
Pledge of Allegiance and a verse of America. The invocation was
given by Biff Averitt. The singing of Home on the Range was led
by Reese Garner. Corey Davidson introduced our guests and
visiting Rotarians.
Pamela Cicionni introduced our guest speaker, Barbara Youree. Ms
Youree is a free- lance writer who began writing after a
teaching career and is the author of “COURAGEOUS JOURNEY walking
the Lost boys path from Sudan to America.” Courageous Journey is
a book which documents the trials and troubles of the thousands
of Sudan young men who were refugees during the period of civil
war within their country. Ms Youree met nine of these young men
in 2001 in Kansas City. They were some of over 3,800 refugees
who located in the United States.
In addition to sharing the story of the young men upon whom the
book is focused, Ms Youree told of the young men’s acclamation
into our society. She shared the example of the young men
rushing out the door in front of their female companions. When
the young men were told of the custom of letting the woman go
first, they explained that in Sudan the men went first to
protect the women from what might be waiting outside. It could
be a wild animal or an enemy.
The peace agreement between north and south Sudan was signed in
2005.
